Medical Education Caboolture: COVID-19

Hi Team, we have pulled together a few of the education resources and learning packages that have been floating around in relation to the COVID-19 pandemic we are currently facing. A thank you to our Education RMO Sam Spenceley for his assistance.

DISCLAIMER: This is by no means an extensive or official list of resources. This is an attempt to channel some of the information and training more relevant to you to the one easily accessible location.

If at any stage, you come across any useful resources, including practical advice from your experience, please let me know.

Tips for ward call

  • At the beginning of your ward call shift, phone the COVID-19 ward, explain that to avoid unnecessary PPE use you are going to come and do all their jobs in one visit, and together decide on a time when this should happen.
  • Wear scrubs. They're easier to change in and out of for COVID areas and if you're lucky enough to sleep overnight you'll be much more comfortable.

Advice from an ED consultant on coming into an emergency term as an Intern:

  1. PPE- know how to put it on and take it off. Seriously. I'm not joking, and they need to actually know what they are doing. 40% of HCW infections come from the crucial step of doffing. Please refer to the videos in the Looking after yourself box.
  2. Any good resources on epidemiology and virology. This is a remarkable learning opportunity to watch policy and theories being tested and their consequences. It would be a shame to miss it.

  3. All the basic procedural skills- IV, IDC, comfort prescribing, taking observations. If you can be active participants in providing care across the hospital - amazing!

  4. Know the hospital systems- MedChart, discharge summaries, death certificates (death in general), iMed, etc. You are relied on by your consultants to know how to make what we want happen.

  5. PPE- look, it's here again.

Tips

  • When on 3B, from inside the room, if the patient call button is pressed by consultant or whomever inside, they can communicate by speaking to the air through to the white phone on the desk. Albeit soft, makes things easier.
